Umoja is Swahili for Unity. In an effort to promote unity and to celebrate the greatness within us as a people, The Umoja Village Nonprofit Corporation is proud and pleased to present our 4th Annual Umoja Village Celebrates Black Excellence calendar. This year’s theme is “Community Influencers.”
Beginning March 16, South Carolina’s public service heroes can apply for $10,000 in forgivable down payment assistance through SC Housing’s 2026 Palmetto Heroes Program, with funds available on a first-come, first-served basis.
$10,000 in forgivable down payment assistance and low, fixed interest rates form the cornerstone of the Palmetto Heroes Program – the agency’s most popular homebuyer program that supports those who play a vital role in our communities, including teachers, nurses, law enforcement officers, correctional officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, veterans, active-duty military, and National Guard members.
The 2026 A.L. Corbett Writing Contest invites 8th-grade students to reflect on the legacy of A.L. Corbett and his commitment to education as a pathway to opportunity. In honor of Black History Month, students will write a 300–500 word essay exploring why educational access mattered in 1954 and how they plan to use their own education to positively impact their community today. Cash prizes will be awarded to top submissions!
Listen to the testimonials from those in our community who have been positively impacted by Umoja Village.
The Unity Works Fundraising Campaign is Umoja Village's year-round fundraiser for individuals, businesses, churches, and organizations to donate undesignated funds to help meet the overall mission needs of Umoja Village, which includes the continued operations of the Richard Johnson Jr. Umoja Village Resource Center and critical crime prevention initiatives outlined in the Umoja Village Rebuilding The Foundation Crime Prevention Plan.
