Unity, Community, and Empowerment.
It’s almost that time again! Umoja Village is excited to announce our upcoming Black History Month Community Celebration, a time to honor and reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black and African American individuals and communities. By coming together as a community, we can honor the legacy of those who came before us and work towards a more inclusive future.
Umoja is Swahili for Unity. In an effort to promote unity and to celebrate the greatness within us as a people, The Umoja Village Nonprofit Corporation is proud and pleased to present our 4th Annual Umoja Village Celebrates Black Excellence calendar. This year’s theme is “Community Influencers.”
The 2026 A.L. Corbett Writing Contest invites 8th-grade students to reflect on the legacy of A.L. Corbett and his commitment to education as a pathway to opportunity. In honor of Black History Month, students will write a 300–500 word essay exploring why educational access mattered in 1954 and how they plan to use their own education to positively impact their community today. Cash prizes will be awarded to top submissions!
Listen to the testimonials from those in our community who have been positively impacted by Umoja Village.
We’re almost there! Thank you for your continued support!

If you’ve been weighing the possibility of taking some classes now that you’re retired, here’s some help to make a case for doing so. I’ve heard several comments from seniors such as “I’m retired — I’m done with classes and learning.” But the speaker obviously hadn’t thought about the positive effects of continuing to seek new knowledge throughout life. Lifelong learning, especially in a classroom setting, offers many advantages for seniors, especially in terms of enhancing brain health and promoting social interaction.
