2025 Black History Month Community Celebration

Theme: Rise Up, You Remnant of God: Don't Forsake Your Faith!

It’s almost that time again! Umoja Village is excited to announce our upcoming Black History Month Community Celebration, a time to honor and reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black and African American individuals and communities. By coming together as a community, we can honor the legacy of those who came before us and work towards a more inclusive future.

Our Black History Month Community Celebration will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Time: 3pm

Location: Lessie B. Price Aiken Senior & Youth Center-841 Edgefield Ave NW, Aiken, SC 29801

This phenomenal event will include a catered meal, additional entertainment, heartfelt tributes, and recognition of the 12 Umoja Village Unsung Heroes featured in the 2025 Umoja Village Celebrates Black Excellence calendar. We will also announce the 2025 William Clyburn Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

 

Our Keynote Speaker

Jayden Broughton

Jayden Broughton, a driven, compassionate, and highly accomplished, is junior at South Aiken High School, Jayden  has demonstrated exceptional commitment and leadership in  his roles as Command Master Chief, PT Team Captain,  Platoon Commander, and Senior Chief Petty Officer in his school's NJROTC unit. His dedication extends beyond  school as he also serves as President of the Aiken NAACP  Youth Council and an Outreach Coordinator for  Success Team. Jayden also serves on the Youth Advisory  Board for the Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University.

 Jayden's accomplishments are numerous and impressive. He is the recipient of the Kennedy Middle School Citizenship  Award (2022) and has earned a certificate and college credit  from George Mason University for his participation in the Washington Journalism and Media Conference. Jayden was also honored with the prestigious Daedalion Award, recognizing his outstanding citizenship and academic  excellence in NJROTC.  Jayden's commitment to service is evident through his  involvement at Second Baptist Church of Aiken, where he  volunteers with the Jesus And Me (JAM) Ministries and  participates in the Teen Helping Young People Evolve  (HYPE) Ministry. 

A native of Eutawville, SC, Jayden is the eldest of two  children. He treasures time with family and friends, enjoys playing baseball and football, has recently developed a passion for sports photography, and is an avid reader and  writer.  Though still in high school, Jayden has already made a  significant impact within our community, serving as a role  model to his peers and embodying the qualities of a true  leader.

His drive, integrity, and commitment make him a  remarkable individual with a bright future ahead.

February is Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration that honors the significant contributions and achievements of Black individuals throughout history. Observed every February in the United States, it serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs faced by the Black community, highlighting figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and many others who have played crucial roles in the fight for civil rights and equality.
